9:15 Keynote Address

How to realise substantial savings and improve your competitive position by reinvigorating your supply chain management

Your keynote address comes from a supply chain professional with 25+ years of experience in hi-the tech industry. He says: “If your supply chain next year, looks like your supply chain of last year.........you’re history!” And you better take Hugh Aitken’s statement on board! Recently Sun has cut its material costs by more than $200 million, reduced its raw materials inventory by $350 million, and lopped a full day off its product transit time—all by streamlining its supply chain.

Sun faces challenges familiar to many hi-tech and electronics manufacturers: customer demands for fast, reliable delivery times; widespread operations; and a broad mix of products with relatively short life cycles. In this presentation you will learn how to manage a heavily outsourced supply chain model in such a demanding environment. You will get top tips how to best coordinate your global manufacturing and distribution, supply chain activities of your component suppliers, external manufacturers, internal manufacturing and 3PLs.

Hugh Aitken, Vice President, Worldwide Manufacturing, Sun Microsystems

The Location Game: Low-Cost Country Sourcing vs Near Shore Sourcing

Qimonda - a leading global memory supplier operates in North America, China, Malaysia, Portugal and Germany with roots that connect it to Infineon Technologies and Siemens. The business has to manage short product cycles of between two and six months. Introducing low-cost suppliers in the semiconductor high-tech environment has proved tough in the past, due to R&D being based mostly in America and Europe – making purchasing activity and the low-cost supplier ate up too much time. However, by utilizing low-cost country sourcing, Qimonda has been able to reduce sourcing cycle time by over 50%, and achieved front-loading savings into the bargain. Come and find out how they did it!

The Value of Knowledge: Unlock the power of knowing the true value of your services for your customer

Before expanding your services offerings, in existing or emerging markets, you would want to know:

  • Which services - and which service levels - your customers value most & how much would they be willing to pay for higher service levels and improved capabilities
  • As part of an overall services approach, what is the role of service logistics in the value chain?
  • Are there customer groups or geographies that have a different views on this? Can you address that with your service offerings?
  • What methods can you use to obtain data-driven answers to such complex questions?

What does it take to do all of this? Surprisingly, not a lot! Commitment, cross-functional collaboration, subject matter experts, and data.

The impact of Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive enjoyed its first anniversary in July this year and as such it is surprising that awareness of the directive remains fairly low, particularly among small businesses. In fact, a recent Dell/FSB Green IT survey revealed that over 20% of respondents did not know if WEEE applied to them.

In this presentation Jonathan Perry will discuss the progress of the 2008 WEEE implementation, the manufacturer’s perspective, the cost to the consumer, as well as the issue of compliance and the practicalities of eco-design.
